Tiago Braga for Oiamo
-
Native of Osório, a small coastal town in Rio Grande do Sul, framed by a string of lakes, between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Region known as Serra do Mar. A culture formed by centuries of interaction between indigenous peoples, blacks and Iberians. Tiago does not recognize himself in the stereotype of the brave gaucho, that country man, inhabitant of a society culturally based on gender segregation. His limitations in understanding the patriarchal traditionalist culture are supplied by the poetic feeling of reinventing this frontier territory. Its gray linear landscape and its cold climate that is so different from Tropical Brazil, a country made of differences, form his poetic visions of scenarios, textures and people who inspire him. His grandmother was a seamstress, his father was a musician, and his mother was a dedicated teacher and also an artisan. Immersed in this creative universe, he graduated in Social Communication. He moved to the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, where he reinforced his creative potential working as an art director, graphic designer and scenographer for major brands.
At the end of 2019, based on his academic research on Design and Sustainability, Tiago found a new purpose in life. He found courage in his intuition and his insights from his contact with collectives of artisans from Rio Grande do Sul, and founded Oiamo.
Supported by the transforming power of design, he continues to rescue and interpret southern know-how, renewed in almost forgotten craftsmanship, ancestral regional heritage that gives soul to his projects, which he calls Ancestral Design.
