Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bianca Dacosta explores the notions of memory and natural resources within a political, post-colonial and anti-extractivist logic. She bases an essential part of her work on the political, ecological and historical situation of her country. Her methods are in line with the logic of subjective cartography and are based on the search for traces of the ancestral memory of the territory, from which she develops tools for other perceptions, other narratives of space, of the body and of nature: marked by the movements that animate indigenous peoples today and the thinking of some of their leaders, she integrates into her work the awareness of the different crises in progress.

More broadly, the prospect of a collapse of civilization is reflected in her work by attempts to reconciliate with nature. Her research is materialized by multiple devices in which performance, photography, film, sculpture and installation are mixed.

After a first degree at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) and at the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, Bianca Dacosta obtained her master’s degree in scénography from Ensad in Paris with honors. She is currently following the production program of Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains. In 2020, she was in residence at the Villa Arson Art Center. Her work has been presented at the Quadriennial of Performance Design and Space in Prague, at Unesco, Espace Krajcberg, Centquatre and Carreau du Temple in Paris, and at Grandes Serres in Pantin.

2023 This series of photographs taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) examines samples of burnt wood and ash collected in areas affected by fires and deforestation in the Amazon in February 2022. The use of this technology enables the materialization of imperceptible dimensions of matter, confusing and weaving links between life and death, interior and exterior, suggesting the cosmological correlation between nature and humanity. The project thus opens up a dialogue on the ecological crisis and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest, aims to bring life out of dead matter and create a living system in response to the loss of this territory.
